SAFE USE OF BRUSHCUTTERS & TRIMMERS

COURSE DESCRIPTION

City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in The Safe Use of Brushcutters and Trimmers (Unit 0014-21). Anyone that is required to use a brushcutter, trimmer or strimmer as part of their work or for personal use. Strimmers (with nylon cord) and brushcutters (rigid blades, usually steel) have become an indispensable tool for quick and effective grounds maintenance. They use a two- or four-stroke engine to power the head, which causes the head to rotate at high speed. Clearly any machine with a cutting head rotating at high speed is potentially dangerous, both to the operators and passers-by. Partly because they can be bought and used by the general public, there is a tendency to underestimate these risks. Correct brushcutter training will help the operator to minimise these risks and work both safely and efficiently. Course Content: • Preparation of the machines for safe and effective use. • Maintainance of the machines, cutting heads, and blades to manufacturers’ guidelines. • Preparation of the machines and setting the harness ready for work. • Using the machines for cutting vegetation to prescribed standards using both trimmer and brushcutter heads. • Cleaning and preparation of machines for transport and storage. • Maintenance (engine, drive system, and gearhead). • Selecting the appropriate cutting head. • Maintaining and fitting the cutting heads. • Correct personal protective clothing. • Inspecting the site and identifying hazards. • Environmental considerations. • Fuelling. • Starting the machine. • Cutting a test area.
